A diplomatic gift shows respect for the recipient, respect for the tradition of protocol, and thoughtfulness; it also provides an opportunity to share your history and culture through the choice of your gift.
Due to the skill required to provide an appropriate and thoughtful diplomatic gift it is considered one of the most difficult gifts to ‘get right’.
The right gift can direct the conversation to the issues that matter by creating a safe space to allow for substantial discussions. It is critical to fully understand the culture with which you are engaging in order to give the right diplomatic gift.
Need a diplomatic gift?
Throughout history, diplomatic gifts have been used to symbolize friendship and respect.
Perhaps one of the more interesting stories is of Indira, the elephant that Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru gifted the children of Tokyo after World War II.
In the post-war period, Japanese school children petitioned to replace the elephant that was tragically lost during the war. It garnered so much public attention that Tokyo collected over a thousand letters addressed to the Prime Mister of India at the time, Nehru.
The Prime Minister saw the chance to strengthen the Indo-Japanese relationship and picked out an elephant named Indira, named after his own daughter.
In a message to Japanese school children, Nehru told them they should treat the elephant “as a gift not from me but from the children of India to the children of Japan. The elephant is a noble animal much loved in India and typical of India. It is wise, patient, strong yet gentle. I hope all of us will also develop these qualities.”
